A 9-amino-acid peptide hormone of the hypothalamus.
Oxytocin is the nonapeptide Cys-Tyr-Ile-Gln-Asn-Cys-Pro-Leu-Gly-NH2 with a disulfide bond between the cysteine residues. It is produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary gland.
In medicine it is used as a prescription drug, mainly in obstetrics.
